This photo was taken from our balcony on December 13, just a week before the longest day of the year - the Summer Solstice in the Southern Hemisphere.  The sun by this time is over the Tropic Capricorn at about 23 degrees south latitude.  Since we're at 18 south, the sun is rising south of us and then the sunrise goes to due east and finally north of east as we approach winter .  This never happens in the US (or anywhere outside the tropics) - sunrise is ALWAYS to the north of east in the US.
