We don't have emus in our area because they seem to prefer drier, more open country.  We have seen them several times when we have driven inland in remote areas.  We were driving along a road in the middle of nowhere when this guy just strolled out in the road.  When we stopped to take a picture, he just ignored us and continued his slow stroll across the road.
