The Sydney Harbour Bridge was a major achievement of its time, finished during the depression in 1932.  But it was more than that.  Remember that Australia as a country didn't even exist until the 1900's.  This was the first really huge project for the new government and was seen as a big success.  The bridge is about 4,000' long and claims to be the biggest bridge in the world (may have been passed recently) because it is 160' wide!  Sydney Harbour extends way inland so bridging it here at the center of the city was a huge convenience.
