Charters Towers is a town of 10,000 about 90 miles inland from Townsville.  In the 1870's it was a gold-mining boom town, one of the richest cities in the world.  The stories of the wealth at that time are amazing and some signs remain.  They spent a lot of money on their civic buildings, including the City Hall.  You're in the Outback here.  It's dry country, with lots of kangaroos and other creatures which thrive in those conditions.
