Another highlight of 1999 was long-planned: to be in Tahiti during their
annual "Fete" celebration in July. Each village spends all year
making costumes and practicing dances and music for the contests between
villages that go on for two weeks. Tourists fly in from all over
the world to watch the shows on the big islands so we decided to go to
Tahaa where the largest village has 600 people and few tourists attend.
We were well-rewarded. This photo is from the children's
competition. These kids are from one of the six little villages
that competed and were they good! The adult competition had even
bigger groups and more elaborate costumes. We went to Bora-Bora
for one night's competition and couldn't get close to the dancers.
On Tahaa they did it for themselves, not the tourists, and we were right
by the dance floor. |
