Pago Pago is the capital of little American Samoa.  The harbor is spectacular, as this photo we took from a high ridge illustrates.  Escapade is one of the boats towards the right side.  However, there are also two very smelly tuna canneries at the left and the bottom is full of trash which means anchors don't hold very well.  Still, we had a great time there.  We were able to stock up on a lot of cheap American products after 10 months out of the country and we were able to have a lot of stuff shipped to us at standard US mail rates.  And there was a cheap laundromat!  The Samoans here were the friendliest people we had met.  There is no tourist industry here - no resorts despite the beauty of the island - and the people were very natural and helpful.  We spent three weeks here and liked it well enough to return in 2002.
