March 25, 20 1/2 days from Mexico, we reached the end of the longest passage we would ever have to make - the island of Nuku Hiva in the Marquesas.  This photo was taken as we approached the bay.  These steep volcanic islands are similar to Hawaii but even steeper.  We were so tired from hand-steering and yet so excited to be at the end of the passage.  The thought of dropping anchor and not having to be alert all the time and both of us sleeping at the same time seemed like the ultimate luxury.  Most of all, though, a great feeling of accomplishment and satisfaction from knowing that years of planning and preparation had paid off.  We were already almost halfway across the Pacific.  As it turned out, we had trouble finding a place where our anchor would hold and spent two exhausting hours before we were set.  Then we spent hours ashore checking into Customs, Immigration, etc.  I slept almost 12 hours that night.
