The last stop in 1999 before going to New Zealand was the Vava'u Islands
in northern Tonga. We had chartered a sailboat here in 1995 and
were looking forward to returning for a longer stay. Cruisers from
all over the world come here for the many beautiful islands and the
fascinating culture in the only country in the South Pacific ruled by a
monarchy going back over 150 years. We visited many islands but
spent weeks on the little island of Hunga, with a population of about
350. This photo shows Club Hunga, a tiny resort owned by a New
Zealand man and his Tongan wife, Hapi. They became good friends as
Patti used our PC to create their first color advertising brochures.
In return, we got several free meals of genuine Tongan cuisine and we
got to know some of the islanders through Hapi. |
