Another amazing island in Vanuatu is Tanna.  It's a little off the beaten path and difficult to sail to so a group of us decided to catch a cheap flight and stay a couple of days in order to visit the two main attractions.  First was the live volcano, which you can see behind Patti.  After driving several hours over the worst dirt and mud roads you can imagine, we drove up to the top right at dark.  We stood on the rim as the volcano went "Pop!  Pop!" and fiery cinders would shoot up in the air right by us.  In fact, a tourist was killed a few years earlier by a flying cinder rock right where we were standing.  It was incredibly eerie and actually I felt stupid for taking such a chance when we were normally very careful.  Once in a while there would by a loud noise and a huge shower of sparks would fly up and you would wonder if it was going to reach you.  I was happy to leave and would never do it again.  But it was an experience, for sure.
