We had heard about Don (nearest on the left) and Sandy (head sticking up) on Destiny from various mutual friends but never met them before New Cal.  They sponsored a wine tasting on their boat which, as you can see, was a popular event.  The festival was everyone's reason for coming but the socializing turned out to be the highlight of the month we spent in Noumea.  The locals ONLY speak French so I got to brush up on my one year of college French again and was quite often the translator for the group - which is pretty bad because I don't speak it well AT ALL.  But when you have to, you make yourself understood.  Once again, the chance to actually LIVE in a foreign country for a month, shop in their grocery stores, etc., is a real privilege and I don't think a regular tourist can duplicate it.
