A very disappointing aspect of New Caledonia is how the French have exploited the island.  New Cal had the biggest nickel resources in the world and the French just ruthlessly strip-mined huge areas of the island and left them to erode away without any attempt to stablize the soil, much less reclaim the land.  It was disgusting - mile after mile of moonscape.
