Some of our best friends are having dinner at the Bay of Islands in New
Zealand. Jim, far right, and Linda, hidden at the far left, of
Laughing Buddha. They also stopped by Port Hinchinbrook on their
way to Thailand. Jody, next to Linda, and Dave in the white
t-shirt of Jaga II. They're now divorced but Dave is a dentist
living in New Zealand. Charlie, next to Dave, and Gayle, to my
right, of Attu with their children Ezra and Hannah and someone I can't
make out in the back. We feel quite close to Ezra and Hannah who
we met when they were about nine and seven. She was climbing up a
mast like a monkey in the marina in Mexico. They were "boat kids"
who were home-schooled and lived full-time with their parents on boats.
This was quite common and these kids were often quite remarkable.
They spent so much time around adults that their vocabulary was more
adult and they tended to talk to you as equals. And yet they were
still kids with the normal joy in playing and running around. We
still keep up with them as Ezra is now heading off to college. |
