After our dugong adventure we lucked into another magical event.
We had seen a small ad in the Port Vila newspaper saying that the First
Annual Malekula Cultural Festival was going to be held in a few weeks in
a small village on the big island of Malekula. Now, Malekula is
reputed to have the most primitive tribes in Vanuatu, with the last
documented act of cannibalism in the late 60's (a missionary).
Many still live their traditional village lives in seldom-visited areas.
Few people had heard of this festival but we were intrigued along our
new friends Miriam and Gordon on "Anwagomi". It took some doing to
figure out where we could anchor but we made our way into the
little-used anchorage at Narsup. Now to get to Lakatoro. We
asked around and found there were taxis that occasionally came by.
As it turned out, these were small pickups and they would cram 10 or 12
people in the back and head off through the hinterlands (no paved
roads). This was a fairly riotous ride. We had to pick up
the people off another taxi that had broken down but eventually made it
to Lakatoro. If you ever thought topless native women would be
sexy, this photo should cure you of that. |
